What Is Reiki? A Grounded Explanation for Remote Energy Healing

If you've heard of Reiki but aren't quite sure what it is, or if you're wondering how energy healing works when you're not in the same room, you're not alone. Reiki can sound abstract, mystical, or too "out there" to be real.
I get it. I offer Reiki sessions remotely, and I still have to explain it regularly.
So let's clear it up.
What Reiki Actually Is
Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui. The word itself breaks down to "rei" (universal) and "ki" (life force energy), essentially the idea that there's an energy that flows through all living things, and when that energy is blocked or depleted, we feel it physically, emotionally, or mentally.
A Reiki practitioner acts as a channel for that energy. We don't "give" you our own energy. We facilitate the flow of universal energy to support your body's natural ability to heal and rebalance itself.
Think of it like this: Your body already knows how to heal. Reiki just creates the conditions for that to happen more easily.
What Reiki Isn't
Let's clear up some misconceptions:
It's not religious. Reiki has spiritual roots, but it doesn't require you to believe in anything specific. You don't need to subscribe to any faith tradition to receive or benefit from it.
It's not magic. There's no spell-casting, no rituals, no theatrics. It's a gentle, grounded practice rooted in intention and energy flow.
It's not a cure-all. Reiki supports your body's healing process. It doesn't replace medical treatment. If you're dealing with a health condition, you should still see your doctor. Reiki complements care, it doesn't replace it.
It's not dependent on touch. This is a big one. Many people think Reiki requires hands-on touch, but energy doesn't work that way. Distance Reiki is just as effective as in-person sessions because energy isn't limited by physical proximity.
How Remote Reiki Works
I offer all my energy healing sessions remotely, meaning you're in your own space, and I'm in mine. And yes, it works.
Here's how:
Before the session: We schedule a time that works for both of us. You don't need to be on a video call with me (though some practitioners offer that option). You just need to be in a quiet, comfortable space where you can relax for 30–60 minutes.
During the session: You lie down, close your eyes, and rest. I connect with your energy remotely and begin facilitating the flow of Reiki. You might feel warmth, tingling, waves of relaxation, or simply a deep sense of calm. Some people feel nothing physical but notice emotional shifts or mental clarity afterward.
After the session: We reconnect (usually via email or a brief call) to discuss what came up. I'll share any insights or areas of focus, and you can share your experience.

What a Reiki Session Feels Like
Everyone experiences Reiki differently, but here are some common responses:
Deep relaxation (many people fall asleep), warmth or coolness in certain areas of the body, tingling or gentle waves of energy, emotional release (sometimes tears, sometimes just a softening), mental clarity or a quieting of anxious thoughts, and a sense of being "reset" or more grounded afterward.
Some people feel immediate shifts. Others notice the effects over the next few days: better sleep, less tension, improved mood, or a sense of emotional lightness.
Who Reiki Helps
Reiki is gentle enough for anyone, but it's particularly supportive for people dealing with chronic stress or anxiety, physical pain or tension, emotional overwhelm or processing grief, life transitions or feeling "stuck," burnout or exhaustion, or a desire for spiritual grounding or energetic clearing.
It's also helpful for people who are simply curious and want to experience what energy work feels like in a safe, trauma-informed way.
Why I Offer Reiki Remotely in Glenview and Beyond
I'm based in Glenview, but because all my energy healing is remote, I work with clients anywhere. Distance doesn't dilute the work. If anything, remote sessions give clients the gift of staying in their own safe, familiar space, which can actually deepen the experience.
Remote Reiki also means no commute, no parking, no rushing. You can rest as long as you need afterward. You control your environment (lighting, temperature, comfort). And it's accessible for people with mobility issues, childcare needs, or busy schedules.

Ready to try it?
If you're curious about Reiki and want to experience it for yourself, I offer remote sessions for clients in Glenview, Chicago, the North Shore, and beyond.
You can book a session at natalieisyourpsychic.com or reach out with questions anytime.
Energy healing doesn't have to be mysterious. It just has to meet you where you are.
