What's the Difference Between a Psychic Reading and a Mediumship Reading?

Tarot cards laid out during a psychic reading session

If you've been thinking about booking a session but aren't sure whether you need a psychic reading or a mediumship reading, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions I get from first-time clients — and honestly, the confusion makes sense. The terms get used interchangeably online, but they're actually two different things.

Understanding the difference can help you choose the session that fits what you're actually looking for. So let's break it down.

What Happens in a Psychic Reading

A psychic reading focuses on the energy around you right now — your relationships, your decisions, the dynamics playing out in your life. I'm not reading your future like a script. I'm tuning into the energetic patterns between you and the people and situations around you.

Think of it this way: if you're trying to figure out why a relationship feels off, or you're stuck on a decision and can't see the full picture, a psychic reading can help you understand what's happening beneath the surface. It's about clarity — seeing things you might already sense but can't quite name.

Most of my psychic readings involve tarot cards, which give structure to the session and help me focus the information coming through. But the cards are a tool, not the source. The reading comes from the energy.

What Happens in a Mediumship Reading

A mediumship reading is specifically about connecting with someone who has passed. My job as a medium is to bridge that communication — to bring through evidence that your loved one is present, and to share whatever messages they want you to hear.

The key word here is evidence. A good mediumship reading isn't vague. I work to bring through specific details — personality traits, memories, physical descriptions, things that are meaningful to you — so you know it's really them. This is why I prefer "sitter-known" mediumship, where you can confirm the details as we go. That validation matters.

Mediumship isn't about predicting your future or giving life advice. It's about connection and healing. People come to these sessions for all kinds of reasons — grief, closure, curiosity, or simply wanting to know their person is okay.

Can You Get Both in One Session?

Sometimes, yes. There are sessions where a loved one comes through unexpectedly during what was meant to be a psychic reading. I don't block that out — if someone shows up with a message, I'll pass it along. But if connecting with a specific person is your main goal, it's better to book a mediumship session so we can dedicate the full time to that.

And if you're not sure which one you need, that's completely fine. You can tell me what's going on when you book, and I'll help you figure out the best fit.

Which One Is Right for You?

Here's a simple way to think about it. If your main question is about a situation in your life — a relationship, a career decision, a pattern you can't break — a psychic or tarot reading is probably what you're looking for. If your main desire is to hear from someone who has passed, a mediumship reading is the right choice.

Both types of sessions are available online or in person. I work with clients throughout Chicago, the North Shore, and worldwide via Google Meet. If you've been on the fence, there's no wrong choice — just the one that fits where you are right now.

If you're newer to tarot and want to explore it in a low-pressure setting, I also host a Tarot Study Group in Andersonville — a great way to get comfortable with the cards before or alongside private sessions.
