Signs a Loved One in Spirit Is Trying to Contact You

Morning light falling across a framed photograph on a wooden table, signs a loved one in spirit is trying to contact you

Most of my Chicago mediumship clients come in with the same question. They don't ask if spirit is real. They ask if what's been happening to them counts.

The smell of a grandmother's perfume in a room she never visited. A song on the radio at the exact moment you were thinking of your dad. A cardinal that keeps showing up in the backyard. Dreams that feel different from regular dreams.

They want to know if they're making it up.

Here's what I can tell you after hundreds of mediumship sessions. Spirit is usually reaching first. People aren't seeking out contact as often as they're trying to make sense of contact that's already happening.

These are the signs I hear about most.

1. The sensory hit that doesn't belong

Perfume. Cigar smoke. The smell of a specific meal your mom used to make. It comes through in a room where it couldn't logically be, and it fades as quickly as it arrived.

Sensory signs are common because spirit doesn't need your permission for them. You don't have to believe. You just have to notice.

2. Songs that keep finding you

Not the song that was playing at the funeral. The song that comes on three times in one day, when you flip between stations, when you walk into a store, when your Spotify shuffle lands on it out of thousands of options.

Spirit uses songs because music moves through time and space. It's a channel that was already open while your person was alive.

3. The same number everywhere

11:11 gets most of the attention, but it's usually more personal than that. Your grandfather's birthday on the microwave clock. Your sister's anniversary on a license plate in front of you at a stoplight. The year someone passed showing up on receipts.

Pay attention to the numbers that mean something to your person, not the ones that mean something on the internet.

4. Animals that show up with intention

Cardinals get the credit. So do hawks, butterflies, dragonflies, and for some of my clients, crows. What matters isn't the species. It's the behavior.

A bird that lands on your windowsill and stares at you for a full minute. A deer that stops in the middle of the road and holds your gaze. An animal doing something animals don't usually do, at a moment that matters.

A raven perched on a stone archway at dawn, symbol of spirit contact and mediumship

5. Dreams that feel different

You'll know the difference. Regular dreams fade by breakfast. Visitation dreams stay with you for weeks. The person looks healthy. They often speak directly. The message is simple. You wake up certain.

A lot of my clients on the North Shore tell me they hesitate to call these real because they sound too good to be true. That hesitation is part of grief. It doesn't make the dream less real.

6. The inner nudge that doesn't feel like your own thought

A sudden urge to call someone. A word or phrase that drops into your mind fully formed. Knowing, without a reason to know, that you should take a different route home.

This one gets dismissed the most because it sounds like instinct. Sometimes it is instinct. Sometimes it's your person.

7. Electronics acting strange

Lights flicker. A lamp that worked fine yesterday won't turn on. Your phone rings with no number. The TV flips channels on its own. A radio turns on in an empty room.

Electricity is one of the easier channels for spirit because it's already moving energy. You don't have to believe it. You just have to notice when it happens near a date or a conversation that mattered.

8. Physical sensations you can't explain

A sudden warmth on one side of your body. Goosebumps that rise out of nowhere in a warm room. A light pressure on your shoulder. The feeling of someone sitting on the edge of the bed.

Your body registers spirit before your mind does. That's not mystical. That's how the nervous system works.

What to do with any of this

First, write it down. Date it. Note what was happening in your life when it occurred. Patterns matter more than single events.

Second, stop dismissing it. Doubt is useful as a filter. It becomes a problem when it becomes the default.

Third, if the signs keep coming and you want more than signs, that's when a mediumship session helps. Signs are spirit saying hello. A session is a conversation.

When a mediumship session is the right next step

If you've been getting signs for weeks or months and you're ready to hear what your person actually wants to say, a mediumship session is the next step. I work with clients in person in Chicago and remotely across the country.

Mother's Day, Father's Day, anniversaries, and the months approaching a death date are all windows when contact tends to come in stronger. If that's where you are right now, you're not making it up. You're paying attention.
